Sixth Annual Philosophy Workshop

June 02, 2016 - June 05, 2016
Dominican Center

The Sixth Annual Philosophy Workshop, "Aquinas on Politics," will be held at Mount Saint Mary College on June 2-5, 2016.

Aquinas on Politics

Aquinas offers analysis of principles basic to political life: the common good, the human family, natural rights, and the nature of justice. How does he understand these principles, their basis in human nature, and their applications? How do they compare with contemporary political theories? Are they applicable in a contemporary setting, and if so, in what way?

Required Reading for Students:

  • Steven L. Brock, The Philosophy of Thomas Aquinas: A Sketch (Eugene, OR: Cascade Books, 2015), chapter 6.
  • Aquinas, Commentary on the Politics of Aristotle, Book I, lec. 1.
