A Fifty Year Retrospective

On October 6, 2013, The Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands will present a special event reflecting on a local controversy that caught national attention in the early 1960s. Nicknamed the "Battle of Newburgh," it was a conflict over Newburgh's new policies for its welfare administration. Newburgh became an informal case study for an entire country moving away from locally-administered welfare to a welfare system dependent on state and national money and mandates.

The events in Newburgh drew so much notice that NBC produced a special documentary in 1962. This fifty-year retrospective on the Battle of Newburgh will include a rare showing of the NBC documentary, followed by a panel discussion with scholars and historians.
