Bio

A graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, Professor Eberle-McCarthy went on for an MA in Spanish from New York University in Madrid, where she also spent her junior year. Professor Eberle-McCarthy holds a PhD in Spanish from the State University of New York at Albany. Her dissertation, "Creacion narrativa y testimonio de una época en la novelística de Manuel Peyrou " traces the influence of Argentine politics in the novels of Manuel Peyrou, a close friend of the more famous Jorge Luis Borges. Professor Eberle-McCarthy received a Fulbright Research Grant that enabled her to live in Buenos Aires for this project.

Study abroad is a major theme in her life. Her desire to teach Spanish grew from her joyful experience as an exchange student in Toluca, Mexico when she graduated high school. Besides studying in Spain, she has also participated in summer language programs in Italy and Switzerland. Most recently she studied the situation of indigenous people of the Andes in Cuenca, Ecuador. ProfessorEberle-McCarthy encourages all students to travel and study abroad and has organized study-tours for college students to Spain, Portugal, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica.

Professor Eberle-McCarthy co-authored (with Rev. Romualdo Zantua) a book and audio tape program for church workers, Pastoral Spanish, that was published by Audio-Forum in 1992. She has published numerous articles and book reviews in Spanish and English and has spoken on topics such as Argentine women writers, the detective novel in Argentina, female characters in the novels of Galdós and Martín Gaite, immigration and literature. While on sabbatical (January - August 2000) she studied women writers and the feminist movement in Ecuador, Argentina and Mexico.

In 1982 Professor Eberle-McCarthy co-authored a 30-credit Hispanic Studies major at Mount Saint Mary College. As the program has expanded, she has researched and introduced many innovative courses including Spanish for Teachers, Media in the Spanish-speaking World, Hispanic Film, Hispanic Women, Golden Age Art and Literature, Race in Latin American Culture and Literature.

Besides teaching at the university level at various other colleges, including SUNY New Paltz and Siena College, Professor Eberle-McCarthy has many experiences in education, including teaching in prisons and in the New Paltz Language Immersion Program, supervising secondary education students and teaching Spanish for enrichment to children as part of the Mount Saint Mary College Program for Gifted Children. All her life she has been an advocate of civil rights, women issues and fair housing. In her spare time she and her husband enjoy canoeing, hiking, whitewater rafting and adventure travel.
