Bio

After teaching in the public schools as a literacy specialist, Professor Cowan is pleased to be working with teacher candidates at the undergraduate and graduate levels. One of her areas of interest involves investigating the role that faculty-supervised course embedded fieldwork plays in the development of good literacy instruction.

Professor Cowan is interested in helping teacher candidates become focused on supporting students to develop all facets of literacy knowledge involving reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing. She works to help teacher candidates assess, plan instruction, and then model and support students through gradually releasing responsibility for effective strategy instruction based on research evidence.

Another area of interest is researching how teacher candidates become more reflective about their own practices. Professor Cowan has done this with teacher candidates in the capstone literacy master’s course, as they reflect on viewing themselves teaching lessons to challenged literacy learners.
