This study abroad trip to the Dominican Republic will provide
experiences that globalize nursing students’ perspective in
cross-cultural patient care.
When: March 3-8, 2013
Academics: Undergraduates can earn 3 credits
during their spring semes- ter towards their elective core
requirements. This course will provide an intensive introduction
into the health care system and the role of the nurse in health
promotion. Students will work in conjunction with the Founda- tion
for Peace while caring for people in the Bateyes in the Dominican
Republic. This course has classroom components in addition to
travel time and all students must be registered for NUR 3176
Selected Topics in Nursing: International Nursing during the spring
semester in order to participate.
Affiliated Institution: This course and all
faculty members are associated with Mount Saint Mary College, and
all credits will be issued by the institution.
Immersion Opportunities:
- Trip to the Dominican Republic for experiences that are
humanitarian and cross-cultural.
- Provide primary prevention of disease by education to people of
the Bateye community.
- Collaborate with the Foundation for Peace, an international
organization dedicated to initiatives that will relieve the effects
of poverty, encourage personal growth, and overcome injustice.
Housing: Students will be housed in a residence
provided by the Foundation for Peace in San Pedro de Macoris.
Application: The final deadline for application
is October 15, 2012.
Costs: Approximate costs are $1,400 which
covers airfare, housing, food, ground transportation in country,
and comprehensive health insurance. This fee is not included in
your semester registration and must be paid directly to the finance
office. Payment plans are available.
Student Experience: Our study abroad programs
are designed to equal the quality of academic rigor expected at
Mount Saint Mary College. The nursing course taught in the
Dominican Republic will meet the requirements for classroom time,
and give students new perspective on integrated and experiential
learning. Undergraduate students will be responsible for submitting
a web-quest assignment exploring the Foundation for Peace, daily
journal entries while in the Dominican Republic, and a reflective
paper.
Physical Requirements: This course requires, as
in all clinical nursing experiences at Mount Saint Mary College, a
current physical exam and PPD. Immunizations required include
Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and tetanus. Students must have completed
NUR 3020.
Admission: Our policies on acceptance to the
program help to ensure that students are capable of performing at
the same academic standard as during a course on the home campus.
All students must complete an application including a personal
statement and a letter of recommendation. A minimum of a 2.5 GPA is
required for admission.
