Sociology
The sociology major at Mount Saint Mary College was developed with three primary goals in mind:
- to provide students with an understanding of the sociological perspective and its universal application;
- to provide students with the skills and knowledge for professional careers and/or graduate school; and
- to expose students to the diverse orientations within the discipline of sociology.
Sociology offers a multitude of resources for students. Sociology majors receive an excellent preparation to continue their graduate studies in social work. Through instruction in sociology, students acquire valuable information and techniques that are applicable to a myriad of professional careers.
Students interested in primary and secondary education, law, social work, general business, marketing, public service and academia find considerable value in the sociological perspective.
The Mount now offers a sociology major with a concentration in criminology. This concentration will prepare students for scholarly careers in sociology, criminology and social deviance, as well as such professional careers in corrections, law enforcement, youth programming, insurance and financial fraud counseling, and judicial court system, to name a few.
