In the Mount’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)
program, students will have the opportunity to apply for paid
summer research positions with participating faculty mentors for
summer 2011.
Students who are chosen for this program will work closely with
a faculty member to carry out a research project and analyze and
present their results. Research will be conducted during one or
both of the Mount’s Summer Sessions. Free dormitory housing will be
available for participating students.
While participating in this summer program, students and their
mentors will have many opportunities to interact with participants
across disciplines, both academically and socially, through weekly
progress updates and activities such as hikes, picnics, and
volleyball.
This past year’s program was very successful, culminating in the
SURE Symposium 2010 where students presented their research in
poster format. The symposium featured Dr. David Sloan Wilson, SUNY
Distinguished Professor of Biology and Anthropology at Binghamton
University, as a keynote speaker. Several students have also
presented their work at other venues.
Faculty will advertise potential research projects to the entire
MSMC community to solicit student interest. These will be
posted to the MSMC Web Portal for students to access. Interested
students will then make arrangements with a participating faculty
mentor to submit a joint application for summer support.
A student may also approach a faculty member with his or her own
ideas for a research project. If the faculty member is willing to
mentor the student during one or both Summer Sessions on this
project, they may submit a joint application for summer
support.
