Mount recognized by New York Blood Center

NSUDuring National Nurses Week from May 6 – 12, Mount Saint Mary College nursing students celebrate being honored as 2014 New York Mets College Blood Donor Champions by the New York Blood Center.

Vanessa Saravia of Mineola, N.Y., Nursing Student Union president; Megan Green of Hyde Park, N.Y., vice president; and Jessica Orozco of Middletown, N.Y., 2014 student representative; attended an award ceremony at Citi Field, prior to a Mets game.

Fr. Kevin E. Mackin, OFM, president of Mount Saint Mary College, is scheduled to bless the nursing pins of 84 graduating seniors this month. Among them will be Saravia, Green, and Orozco.

The Mount’s Nursing Student Union and other campus clubs have organized several blood drives. The most recent yielded a total of 165 pints from students, faculty, staff, and community members.

“This blood is vital to the community to save many lives,” said professor Andrea Ackermann, chair of the college’s nationally accredited nursing program. “Thank you to all who donated during our blood drive.”

Ackermann also thanked Nursing Student Union advisors Jeanne Roth and Jill Sussman, associate professors of nursing, for their support and guidance.

Blood donations are essential for surgeries, treatments, and emergencies.

Some 37 percent of Mount students are preparing for careers in healthcare. 

The Mount offers nationally accredited nursing degree programs, and also pre-med, pre-veterinary, pre-dental, podiatry, and physical therapy studies.
