Mount Saint Mary College signs articulation agreement with WCC

February 11, 2011

Newburgh, NY -

Mount Saint Mary College and Westchester Community College leadership recently signed an articulation agreement facilitating the transfer of credits to Mount Saint Mary College, which overlooks the Hudson River 60 miles north of New York City.

The agreement, effective immediately, was signed by Fr. Kevin E. Mackin OFM, Mount Saint Mary College president, and Iris Turkenkopf, vice president for academic affairs, along with Westchester Community College president Dr. Joseph Hankin and Chet Rogalski, vice president/academic dean.

A student with an associate’s degree from Westchester Community College can bring up to 60-66 transfer credits toward the completion of a bachelor’s degree at Mount Saint Mary College. Upon transfer, students from Westchester Community College will select a major in one of the Mount’s rigorous and competitive programs.

With 2,700 men and women on campus, Mount Saint Mary College faculty can provide an environment of personal attention and intellectual challenge as students pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

Mount Saint Mary College offers bachelor’s degrees with strong preparation for careers in health professions, business, education, human services and liberal arts, plus master’s degrees in business, education and nursing.

Remarkably, nearly 100 percent of nursing graduates from Mount Saint Mary College are employed within six months of graduation, according to Dr. Debra Hrelic, chair of nursing.

In addition to clinical experience off site, nursing students train on patient simulators in the campus’ state of the art labs in Kaplan Family Mathematics, Science and Technology Center. Simulators provide examples of numerous scenarios and help develop critical thinking and decision making skills for real world life and death health challenges.

Teacher education is another example of the powerful academic programs at Mount Saint Mary College.

Described as “the Navy Seals of education” by Alex Kuchar, a senior majoring in history, the intensive program “over-prepares you and makes student teaching easier than the classroom.”

Another distinctive feature of the Mount teacher education program is early placement in fieldwork. Students are in classrooms in the community, accompanied by their Mount instructors, beginning in the sophomore year: much earlier than at most other colleges.

The education program at the Mount has earned high grades in preparing qualified teachers. Mount graduates score at 98 percent on tests for licensure; New York State requires an 80 percent pass rate.

Mount Saint Mary College also has special agreements with community colleges in Orange, Dutchess, Rockland, Sullivan and Ulster counties.

Strong relationships with graduate schools, including Fordham University and New York Medical College, ensure students a successful transition for advanced career preparation.

An Open House will be held on February 20 at the campus at 330 Powell Avenue.

Mount Saint Mary College has been ranked a Top-Tier Regional University (North) by U.S. News & World Report.
