Mount Saint Mary College business students recently delved into sustainability – that is, a company’s financial, social, and environmental risks, obligations, and opportunities – with a panel from Perry’s Ice Cream.

The eager students enjoyed speaking with three members of Perry’s Sustainability Team via Skype: Gayle Denning, director of sustainability and brand advancement; Lynn Staples, corporate services business partner; and Marissa Wilson, communications manager.

While reviewing Perry’s sustainability report, the students of Tracy Niemotko, accounting professor and School of Business chair; and Moira Tolan, business professor and School of Business graduate program coordinator; learned:

What motivated Perry’s to get on-board with sustainability reporting

  • How Perry’s developed the components
  • Why the company views this as a priority
  • How sustainability reporting benefits the community and sales

Perry’s Ice Cream is based in Akron, N.Y. and has been in operation since 1918.

Also speaking at the event was Stephanie Doctor, NextGen program administrator with the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA). Doctor discussed the Uniform CPA examination, networking and job opportunities, and the benefits of joining the NYSSCPA.
