English
See yourself as an English major
Do you love to read? Are you disappointed when you turn the last page of a novel or play? Do you love to write? Do you dream of adding your name to the list of great American writers? If you love to read and write, the Mount's program leading to a degree in English is the program for you.
The study of literature in English at the Mount opens the door to a variety of careers: teaching, writing, editing, and publishing, to name just a few. A major in English not only prepares you for graduate school, it also builds a foundation for a personally fulfilling life.
If you are considering a teaching career, the Mount provides you with programs in English/Adolescence Certification and English/Childhood Education.
Students can gain practical experience in internships and Cooperative Education opportunities in the real world of advertising agencies, media outlets and publishing houses.
Together with a distinguished faculty and small classes, students have an excellent program that will challenge them academically and help them meet their career goals.
Study Abroad
The world can be your classroom at the Mount. Our Study Abroad Program offers you an opportunity to study in a foreign country. You can spend a semester studying at a number of different colleges and universities in England, Ireland, Scotland or Australia to name just a few of the locations where our students have studied.
In addition to our semester-long programs, the Mount has an exceptional summer abroad program with St. Clare's College in Oxford, England. You'll not only study great literature, you'll take a number of day trips to round out the abroad experience.
The liberal arts tradition
While it is very important to concentrate on one area of study, we believe that exposure to courses in other disciplines will develop you as a whole person. No matter what course of study you pursue at the Mount, you will take a number of required courses in the liberal arts (arts and letters, natural science, math, social science, and philosophy or religion.) Combined with the elective courses you choose to take, you will become a critical thinker and a life-long learner.
