Take a look at the world around you and try to imagine what it would be like if it weren't for mathematicians? There would be no buildings, no cars, no bridges or tunnels, no. Let's face it. We can't live without mathematicians. That's why the Mount offers a solid program in mathematics.
As a Mathematics major at the Mount you benefit from courses that will prepare you to become a professional mathematician or to use mathematical concepts in a number of different fields of study.
The Mount offers certification in both childhood and adolescence education for mathematics majors. Students receiving education certification at either the elementary or secondary level pursue the same major in mathematics as those preparing for industry. This strong major, supported by the education certification program, is another winning combination. In preparing to become teachers, mathematics majors have a strong academic background, yet they are able to move easily into other areas.
The liberal arts tradition
While it is very important to concentrate on one area of study, we believe that exposure to courses in other disciplines will develop you as a whole person. No matter what course of study you pursue at the Mount, you will take a number of required courses in the liberal arts (arts and letters, natural science, math, social science, and philosophy or religion.) Combined with the elective courses you choose to take, you will become a critical thinker and a life-long learner.
