Chemistry
See yourself as a Chemistry major

Perhaps you dream about discovering a new element or advancing the study of DNA. Or perhaps you want to be part of a scientific team that discovers a new source of energy to fuel our cars and light our homes.

The Chemistry major at the Mount has been designed to provide students with a broad perspective of the practices that constitute modern chemistry as well as a strong background in biology, physics and mathematics.

Mount chemistry students enjoy learning in an intimate atmosphere where they receive personal attention from highly qualified faculty with a diversity of scientific expertise and research interests. The average class size is 15 students and the student to faculty ratio in the major is approximately 9:1.

The Chemistry program prepares students for graduate work in chemistry, entrance into medical or dental school, or positions in industry or teaching. The diversity of our program, based upon a sound liberal arts framework, has created a growing and successful cadre of alumni.

The liberal arts tradition

While it is very important to concentrate on one area of study, we believe that exposure to courses in other disciplines will develop you as a whole person. No matter what course of study you pursue at the Mount, you will take a number of required courses in the liberal arts (arts and letters, natural science, math, social science, and philosophy or religion.) Combined with the elective courses you choose to take, you will become a critical thinker and a life-long learner.
