Interdisciplinary Studies
See yourself as an Interdisciplinary Studies major

Perhaps your interests go beyond the confines of one of the Mount's many majors. For example, you might be interested in marketing but also interested in communication. In that case, you might consider Integrated Marketing Communication, an interdisciplinary studies concentration that combines business, communication arts and computer science courses, just one of the interdisciplinary studies major at the Mount.

Interdisciplinary students may concentrate in General Science, International Studies or Pre-Law (see separate listing for more details) to name just a few of the different concentrations currently offered.

However, you are not limited to the concentrations described here. A student who wishes to pursue a specific topic or theme that crosses disciplinary lines and for which there is no formal major at Mount Saint Mary College may choose to major in Interdisciplinary Studies. Any topic for which there are sufficient courses in the catalog to meet the requirements of the major may form the basis for an Interdisciplinary Studies major.

General Science Concentration

The General Science concentration is available for those students planning to obtain certification in childhood education. General science is an Interdisciplinary Studies program that provides students with a background in each science area and prepares them to teach science on the childhood level. Advisement for this concentration is done cooperatively by faculty in biology or chemistry and faculty in education.

International Studies Concentration

International Studies is an Interdisciplinary Studies concentration that draws upon existing majors in Business Management and Administration, History and Political Science, in addition to concentrations in foreign cultures.

The liberal arts tradition

While it is very important to concentrate on one area of study, we believe that exposure to courses in other disciplines will develop you as a whole person. No matter what course of study you pursue at the Mount, you will take a number of required courses in the liberal arts (arts and letters, natural science, math, social science, and philosophy or religion.) Combined with the elective courses you choose to take, you will become a critical thinker and a life-long learner.
