Social Science
See yourself as a Social Sciences major
The Social Science major is designed to give students wide exposure to the social sciences while concentrating in one particular discipline. Students may concentrate in:
- History
- Political Science
- Psychology
- Sociology
and distribute the remaining credits over two other areas.
In doing so, Social Science majors receive a strong foundation in the theories, research techniques and analytical skills of one of the social sciences, while developing an understanding of the relationship between that discipline and the other social sciences. Students have the opportunity to interact with social science faculty members from all disciplines.
This major is particularly useful to students interested in elementary teaching or a career in social services. Students are encouraged to participate in an internship. In the past, Mount Social Sciences majors have interned in the New York State Assembly, state and local government offices, community and social service organizations and local health care facilities. Students are also encouraged to study abroad and many do. One senior recently returned from a semester in London, where he worked as an intern in Parliament.
Mount Social Science graduates have gone on to positions in business, local and national corporations, government on all levels, law enforcement, the legal profession, social services and teaching. Many of our graduates have gone on to graduate and professional schools to work toward an advanced degree in social work.
Human Services, Psychology and Sociology majors interested in social work can complete three years of study at the Mount and two additional years at Fordham University. After completing their studies they will graduate with a B.A. from the Mount and a Master's in Social Work (MSW) from Fordham.
Psychology majors can earn their Doctorate in Physical Therapy by completing their undergraduate degree at the Mount in three or four years and by attending New York Medical College for three additional years.

The liberal arts tradition
While it is very important to concentrate on one area of study, we believe that exposure to courses in other disciplines will develop you as a whole person. No matter what course of study you pursue at the Mount, you will take a number of required courses in the liberal arts (arts and letters, natural science, math, social science, and philosophy or religion.) Combined with the elective courses you choose to take, you will become a critical thinker and a life-long learner.
