Assistant Professor of Psychology Amanda Maynard
Professor Amanda Maynard chose to teach at the Mount for many of the same reasons our students do—small classes, the opportunity to work closely with students, and a place where she could make a contribution.
In the classroom, her expectations, for both her students and herself, are clear.

What are her classes like?

What does she think it takes to be a successful student at the Mount?

“Students can expect to be treated professionally, with respect, and fairness. With respect to class content, my students can expect a challenging course that requires them to contribute to class discussion and a professor who is intrinsically interested in the subject matter. Also, students can expect to find a person who is genuinely interested in their ideas and concerns.

“Outside of class, I am accessible to students should they need academic or other assistance. I enjoy speaking to students outside of class about psychology, graduate school, or other topics outside of academics.”

“In my General Psychology class, students conduct a Fields of Psychology research project. Students research a field of psychology and create PowerPoint presentations to be shared with other class members during a poster session. I group students by major and assign them to a field of psychology that interfaces with their major.

“Students have often commented that they did not know that their major intersected with psychology and often leave the class with new career opportunities to research further. Students also have reported that they met students who have similar interests that they did not previously know and find this arrangement more satisfying than simply working with friends they knew prior to taking the course.”

“To be successful in my classes, students must be motivated to work hard, develop good study skills, and be open to developing a deeper understanding of new disciplines. A successful student comes to class regularly, reads the assignment before class, and studies in between class sessions.

The best advice I can give to new students is to design a work schedule for themselves that includes time to read, to study, to get involved in campus activities, and to have fun!”
