Accounting major Ashley Sofia (pictured at right) is living in Waterbury, CT, near her fulltime
six-month alternating co-op at IBM in Southbury. She commutes to the
Mount to take three evening classes in the
accelerated program.
"I didn't want to pass up the opportunity to work at IBM," says Ashley. She is responsible for cash payment proposals, cash receipts, reallocations, miscode corrections, ledger reconciliation of cash clearing accounts, and monthly key indicator measurement reports for management review. She has recently assumed responsibility for the IBM Canada Cash Desk, where she is learning both inter-company accounting processes and various computer systems.
"It's a good experience overall but it's different from public accounting," says Ashley. She faced a big transition from public to corporate accounting, especially since her previous co-ops have been geared toward public accounting.
Harry Robinson, her supervisor, says, "Ashley has learned to rise to the occasion. She's learned skills of listening, time management, and verbal and written communication: how to communicate as an individual and as a member of a team."
