Mount Students Enter Criminal Justice Field

Meghan Fescoe"Working for the New York State Attorney General's Office has given me more insight and has made me realize how much I can't wait to become a lawyer. It is a wonderful opportunity to work with different lawyers and see first hand what they do day in and day out," says prelaw student Meghan Fescoe (pictured at right). As a public advocate, Meghan is a student mediator assisting consumers in filing complaints and helping the legal staff with ongoing investigations.

Jessica Jagielski is also interning at the state level with Janelle Cleary, Project Director of the New York State Council on Children and Families/NYS Community Justice Forum. Jessica is researching the success rate of Restorative Justice practices across New York State and compiling information into a newsletter for and about programs in New York State's 62 counties. Restorative Justice works to prevent re- offenses by restoring young offenders' commitment to civility and community.

In the Judicial Branch of the State of Connecticut, Keith Krompinger interned this summer as an Adult Probation Officer Assistant. He contacted clients and crime victims by phone or letter, observed interaction between probation officers and clients, and met with clients in the office and in the field. He also maintained records of low-risk and active clients, collected data on financial restitution, and provided accurate reports of clients' progress.

Locally, Meghan Greco is assisting Cheryl DePaolo, Coordinator of the Substance Abuse Action Team. Serving Newburgh and New Windsor, the federally funded coalition is a collaboration of representatives from local government, agencies, schools, law enforcement, youth, parents and community members working together to reduce substance abuse by implementing multiple strategies across multiple sectors of the community.

Aspiring police officers Sean Conley and Shannon Hansen have just completed internships in the Town of Poughkeepsie and Highland Falls Police Departments respectively, while Nicholas Boulanger is presently interning in Newburgh at Pius XII Chemical Dependency Clinic. Nicholas assists in intakes, diagnostic, vocational and community needs assessments, group therapy sessions and case management tasks.
