Students Learn What It Takes to Be Physical Therapists

Students Learn What It Takes to Be Physical TherapistsStudents interested in a career in physical therapy must complete a minimum of 50 hours (but the more hours the better) of volunteer work in a variety of physical therapy settings as a requirement to apply for admission to PT graduate school. This summer two students, Bryan De La Rosa and Melody Sapeg added many patient contact hours to their portfolios.

Bryan De La Rosa was accepted into the New York University School of Medicine Health Career Opportunity Program and worked in the Physical Therapy Department during the summer, observing treatment methods and techniques. Says Bryan, "This experience introduced me to the kind of work the field demands. It was an insightful introduction to physical therapy, leaving me with a better understanding of the career. I saw the kind of teamwork and therapist-patient relationship needed to accomplish goals set forth during physical therapy."

Having previously completed many hours of observation, Melody Sapeg was selected for the Health Experience Learning Program at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, NY where she worked as a paid PT aide. Says Melody, "At first I expected this experience to simply be observing; however this was not the case. I had the opportunity to be responsible for my own patients on a daily basis." She continues, "This position helped to enhance my communication skills with other disciplines. It also enhanced my confidence in terms of helping to realize that I have what it takes to be a PT."
