Hisotry and Restoration of the Balmville Cemetery
One of the wonderful treasures of Mount Saint Mary College is the Desmond Campus in Balmville. A little known part of the Desmond Cmapus is the Balmville cemetery, located just south of the house off of a rutted dirt road that winds down the hill into the forest. Mount Saint Mary History Professor Glenn Reynolds has recently teamed up with Social Sciences Secretary Kundi Clark, and they have begun the laborious task of locating, restoring and cataloguing the dozens of gravestones on the site. Largely neglected and covered over with brush, leaves and ivy, the plots belong to well-known Organe County families from the Newburgh/Balmville region dating back to the 1830-60s, some of whom still have descendents residing in the area. Reynolds and Clark hope to have the cemetery historically recognized by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation shortly. This recognition will serve to raise awareness of the history of the area, and the integral role that Mount Saint Mary College plays in helping ot memorialize that history. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, as you will walk to the cemetery, weather permitting.
