From Inspiration to Illumination, The Saint John’s Bible: A Handwritten Bible for the 21st Century

Lecture by Tim Ternes, Director of The Saint John’s Bible, Hill Museum & Manuscript Library, St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN

At the dawn of the twenty-first century, Saint John’s Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minnesota commissioned a work of art designed to illuminate the Word of God for a new millennium and to ignite the spiritual imagination of people throughout the world.

The Saint John’s Bible is the first hand-lettered, hand-illuminated Bible produced in more than 500 years. It was created under the artistic direction of Donald Jackson, one of the world’s foremost calligraphers and the Senior Scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. The Bible was completed in 2011, after more than 12 years of work by a team of scribes based in Wales and artists located around the world. Its permanent home is the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library at Saint John’s Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minnesota.

The complete Saint John’s Bible consists of 1,165 pages in seven volumes and features 160 major illuminations in a wide range of artistic styles. It is monumental in size, with each volume measuring 18 x 27” and weighing approximately 15 lbs. It incorporates many of the characteristics of its medieval predecessors: it was written on vellum, using quills, natural handmade inks, hand ground pigments and gild such as gold leaf, silver leaf and platinum. And yet, it employs a modern English translation (the New Revised Standard Version) as well as contemporary script and images that are relevant to today’s readers.

In order to share the beauty of The Saint John’s Bible with people around the world, a full-size, museum-quality fine art reproduction of the original has been created. Directed by Donald Jackson in order to assure faithfulness to the original in every detail, the “Heritage Edition” is an artistic masterpiece in its own right.

Mount Saint Mary College will be home to two volumes of the Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible through May 2016. The volumes are on permanent display in the Dominican Center on the Mount campus in Newburgh. To kick off their “Year with The Saint John’s Bible,” MSMC is hosting an illustrated lecture on the Bible from a renowned expert.

TernesTim Ternes, Director of The Saint John’s Bible at the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library at St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN, will present “From Inspiration to Illumination, The Saint John’s Bible: A Handwritten Bible for the 21st Century” at Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday, October 14 at 7 p.m. in the Aquinas Hall Theatre. Through video, rich visual images, and dynamic reproductions, attendees will learn about the processes, tools, methods, and materials behind this inspirational undertaking.
