iROC: Counter Cyclical Monetary Policy and Stress Test

 iROC - InvestigatingResearch on Campus

Please be with us Thursday, November 3rd when AKM Rezaul Hossain, MSMC School of Business, presents Counter Cyclical Monetary Policy and Stress Test.

Banking business is essentially pro-cyclical. During economic expansions banks tend to lend more, which increases money supply in the economy and generates an inflationary pressure. During recessions, they withdraw money from the markets, which has the potential to intensify recessionary pressure. To reduce volatility in business cycles, monetary policy measures are designed to be counter-cyclical. During expansion, policy makers tend to tighten money supply and interest rate to stem inflationary pressure, while during recession, money supply is loosened to spur economic activity and reduce unemployment associated with economic downturns. Dr. Hossain will discuss that regulatory mechanism built into two federal measures cause the recession to be more pronounced and prolonged.

AKM Rezaul Hossain is an Associate Professor of Economics in MSMC's School of Business. His primary research areas include access to credit and discrimination in mortgage credit markets, risk management and regulation of financial institutions. His recent publications include Neighborhood Information Externalities and Provision of Mortgage Credit Branch Location Choice: Do Lenders Discriminate?

Counter Cyclical Monetary Policy and Stress Test will take place November 3rd at 12:45 p.m. in the DC Café of the Dominican Center. This event has been approved for College Connection FYE credit, but students at all levels are welcome. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!
