iROC: Field Experience Impact on Future Educators’ Attitudes toward Disability

iROC - Investigating Research on Campus

Please be with us Thursday, September 22nd when Vicki Caruana,Victoria CaruanaMSMC's Division of Education, will present  Field Experience Impact on Future Educators’ Attitudes toward Disability.

Attitudes and concerns held by teacher candidates during their preparation are often challenged during their clinical experiences. For those who were prepared prior to when inclusion became a routine part of general education, a negative correlation between experience and a sense of efficacy have been reported. Three variables have been examined frequently: the impact of clinical settings, the impact of other professionals, and the impact of the teacher preparation coursework experiences. The intersection of these three identified impacts has the power to provide rich, meaningful, relevant, and transformative experiences for teacher candidates as they engage with an increasingly diverse student population. This presentation focuses on the impact of fieldwork (clinical experiences) on the attitudes and concerns of MSMC teacher candidates toward working with students with disabilities.

Vicki Caruana is Assistant Professor of Education in the Division of Education. Dr. Caruana gained her Ph.D. from the University of South Florida and was a K-12 classroom teacher for ten years working in special education and gifted education. Dr. Caruana is the author of more than 23 books and more than 100 articles on topics of education and parenting. She has recent academic articles published in scholarly journals such as Preventing School Failure, The Journal of Transformative Education, and InSight: A Journal of Scholarly Teaching.

Field Experience Impact on Future Educators’ Attitudes toward Disability will take place in Kaplan Library Room 218 of the Dominican Center. This event has been approved FYE credit as College Connection. Light refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!
