Genocide in Literature and Art: Evoking Witness and Denial

Please join us for iROC’s first-ever MONDAY NOONTIME SESSION on October 26th, when Jane Gangi, Division of Education, will present Genocide in Literature and Art: Evoking Witness and Denial.

This date has been added to the iROC schedule in order to offer our seminars on a day other than Thursday. Monday at noon was selected based on the time preference survey we conducted last fall. We hope you find it convenient!

Genocide, the killing of large numbers of people part of the same ethic group, has been present in a number of cultures. This presentation will look at the ways literature and art can both bear witness to genocide as well as contribute to denial of genocide. The focus will be mostly on the post-Holocaust genocides of Cambodia, Guatemala, Iraq, Bosnia, Srebrenica, Kosovo, and Darfur.

Jane M. Gangi is Associate Professor of Education in the MSMC Division of Education. She is a member of the Mount’s Collaborative for Equity in Literacy Learning (CELL). Her research areas are arts-based literacy and multicultural literature. CELL recently completed a project for Student Achievement Partners to make Appendix B of the Common Core more inclusive of multicultural literature. Routledge will publish her third book, Genocide in Contemporary Children's and Young Adult Literature: Cambodia to Darfur, in December.

Genocide in Literature and Art: Evoking Witness and Denial will take place in the Library Café in the Dominican Center at MSMC on MONDAY, October 26th at 12:00 p.m. Bring your lunch or pick up something at the DC Smart Market. Light refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!
