The Spread of Infectious Diseases Among Humans and Animals: The Effects of Poverty and Politics

iROC - Investigating Research on Campus

Please join us on September 24th when John Albarino, R.N will discuss the worldwide effects of poverty and politics on zoonotic infectious diseases.

The modern world has given infectious diseases a means of travelling globally. The most recent outbreak of the Ebola virus, a virus that was thought to have been contained, showcases the strength and virility of an infectious disease that can be spread between animals and humans even with the advanced nature of medicine. Several instances in which infectious diseases pass from one country to the next have occurred with little result on the political front, yet millions of people have suffered.

Mr. Albarino will discuss what zoonosis is and why it is present in at least ¾ of emerging diseases. He will also examine what makes viruses so dangerous and why political involvement is focusing on “looking good over the common good”.

John Albarino, R.N. has worked as a nurse at SUNY Ulster Health Services since 2004. He is a certified emergency nurse and EMY paramedic. Mr. Albarino has taught courses on infectious disease and emergency nursing. He earned master’s degrees in education and counseling and also in management from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Long Island University. Mr. Albarino holds a B.S. in community health from Mercy College and an A.A.S. in nursing from SUNY Orange.
