Oh Happy Fault: The Human Element in the Creation of The Saint John's Bible

iROC: Investigating Research on CampusSaint John's Bible: Creation

Please be with us on March 10th at 12:45 p.m. when Robert Miller, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies in MSMC’s Division of Philosophy and Religious Studies and Stephanie Pietros, Assistant Professor of English in MSMC’s Division of Arts and Letters will present Oh Happy Fault: The Human Element in the Creation of The Saint John's Bible.

The Kaplan Family Library and Learning Center is currently hosting two volumes of the Heritage Edition from The Saint John’s Bible. This Bible is the first illuminated Bible created in over 500 years, using calfskin vellum and other medieval materials. Because it is hand-written, there is room for error, which we see the calligraphers and artists integrate into the book in creative ways. The presentation will look at the historical background which led to the creation of the St. John’s Bible and compare the errors of modern scribes to those of medieval and ancient scribes.

Dr. Miller received his Bachelor of Arts from University of Scranton, Master’s degree from Seton Hall University, and his PhD from The Catholic University of America. He is a Senior Fellow of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology. He has taught both graduate and undergraduate classes in scripture and theology at Caldwell College and Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology at Seton Hall University. His present research is on Marian Typology in the Book of Esther and the Wedding at Cana.

Dr. Pietros received her Bachelor of Arts from Providence College, Master of Arts, Master of Philosophy, and PhD from Fordham University. She teaches courses in medieval and early modern language and literature as well as first-year writing and literature courses. Her interest in the history of the book led to the creation of a special topics course, "From the Scroll to the eBook," which is being offered this semester in conjunction with the Mount's year with the St. John's Bible.

Oh Happy Fault: The Human Element in the Creation of The Saint John's Bible will take place on in the Dominican Center Café on March 10th at 12:45p. Bring your lunch or pick up something at the DC Smart Market. Light refreshments will be served. The Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible will be on display and available for viewing before and after the presentation. We hope to see you there!
