Getting a Jumpstart: Basic Science Research as an Undergraduate

iROC - Investigating Research on Campus

Please be with us Thursday, February 16th when Jacqueline Copeland, MSMC student in the Division of Natural Sciences, presents Getting a Jumpstart: Basic Science Research as an Undergraduate.

Before any innovative treatment can be created, the scientific process behind the disease must be understood. This understanding is true for many once mysterious biological pathways and many discoveries have lead to a deeper understanding of diseases such as cancer. Basic scientific research is the foundation upon which application research builds. Basic scientific research can be conducted in any laboratory setting, including right here at Mount Saint Mary College. Ms. Copeland will discuss her work in investigating genetic interactions associated with the splicing gene PRP5 in S. cerevisiae (more commonly known as baker’s yeast). In addition to discussing her basic research and implications of its use, Ms. Copeland will reflect upon how conducting basic research has impacted her life.

Jacqueline Copeland is a senior Biology major in the Division of Natural Sciences at Mount Saint Mary College. Since participating in the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) her sophomore year, she has continued to work on identifying genetic interactions in S. cerevisiae, alongside faculty mentor Dr. Evan Merkhofer. Upon graduation, Jacqueline hopes to continue pursuing a career in scientific research by participating in a Post-Baccalaureate research program and eventually attend graduate school.

Getting a Jumpstart will take place February16th at 4 p.m. in Kaplan Library Room 218. This event has been approved for College Connection FYE credit, but students at all levels are welcome. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!
