Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention

Presented by Maria Idoni, Area Director, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)

Talk Saves Lives is a community-based presentation that will cover the general scope of suicide, the research on prevention, and what people can do to fight suicide. Attendees will learn the risk and warning signs of suicide, what suicide is, who it affects, what we know about it, and what can be done to prevent it.

Maria Idoni is Area Director for the Hudson Valley and Westchester Chapters of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). She has been active in the field of suicide prevention since 2008. In her time with AFSP, Maria helped to establish the two chapters which she now oversees. She is a registered trainer in suicide prevention programs such as: QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer), safeTALK, and Connect. In her work, she implements local suicide prevention programming, teaches gatekeeper training classes, and advocates for suicide prevention laws. She has been the organizer of the Hudson Valley and Westchester Lifekeeper Memory Quilt since 2008. It is her passion to continue to lessen the stigma associated with mental illness and suicide and also to help reduce the annual suicide rate by 20% in this region by 2025.

Talk Saves Lives is presented by Kaplan Family Library and Learning Center, the MSMC School of Nursing, and the MSMC Counseling Center. It will take place in the Dominican Center Café on March 2nd at 4:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. The AFSP Lifekeeper Memory Quilt will be on hand during this presentation.
