What's So New About the New New Math?

iROC: Investigating Research on Campus
An MSMC Library Week Event

Monica Merritt, associate professor of education at Mount Saint Mary College, will present “What’s So New About the New New Math? George Pólya and Connections to the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice” on April 7 at 12:45 p.m.

Part of the Mount’s Investigating Research on Campus (iROC) series, the talk will take place in the Kaplan Family Library and Learning Center at the Mount, 330 Powell Ave., Newburgh.

The event is free and open to the public.

Pólya, who Merritt calls “one of the most remarkable mathematicians of the 20th century,” made fundamental contributions to problem solving theory and mathematics education. Merritt will discuss how Pólya’s work can be used to apply and gain a better understanding of the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice.

Merritt has worked in mathematics education for more than 20 years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University, a Master of Science from Bank Street College of Education, and a Doctor of Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

The goal of the Mount’s iROC seminar series is to “provide a forum for Mount faculty, staff, and students to present research proposals, preliminary data, and completed projects,” explained Douglas A. Robinson, assistant professor of biology and coordinator of the program. The iROCs feature various academic fields.
