Bio

Sister Margaret (Peggy) Murphy has been involved in the fields of Counseling and Education for 35 years. She has worked in schools in New York City, Puerto Rico, and Orange and Sullivan Counties in New York.

Sister Peggy has been a national conference speaker on Child Development and Mental Health issues. She has a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from St. John’s University, a master’s degree in Pastoral Counseling from Iona College Graduate School, a master’s degree in Psychiatric Social Work from Yeshiva University, and a doctorate in Christian Spirituality from the Theological School of Drew University, Madison, New Jersey.

Sister Peggy has been a New York State Certified Substance Abuse Counselor for 30 years. She has worked in inpatient treatment at Veritas Villa Rehabilitation Center and at Downstate and Fishkill Correctional Facilities.

As a Social Worker in Pius XII Youth and Family Services, Sister Peggy was the Director of Substance Abuse Services at the Chester Campus residential program for adolescent males, where she initiated a Teen Parenting Program. As Senior Case Worker at Pius XII Monroe Alcohol Program, Sister Peggy was involved in adult and adolescent outpatient treatment services and Play Therapy Groups with children of substance abusers. In 1993, Sister Peggy opened the Pius XII Early Learning Center, a Montessori Pre-School and Daycare Center serving children aged 3-5 years, in Goshen, New York.

Sister Peggy has received the following awards:

2014 – Study Grant: Programs for Jewish Civilization at Georgetown University Holocaust and Genocide Studies School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Washington D.C.

2013 – Scholarship Grant from the National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education, Seton Hill University, for Study in Israel, International Seminars for Educators – Jerusalem University and Yad Vashem, Jerusalem, Israel

2008 – Excellence in teaching award, Mount Saint Mary College Leadership Society

2003 – New York State Senate Woman of Distinction Award

2002 – Healthy Orange Volunteer Service Award

2001 – Middletown Lions Club, Knight of the Blind Award

2001 – Grand Marshall, Mid-Hudson St. Patrick’s Day Parade

1999 – Orange County Martin Luther King Jr. Commission Human Rights Award

1998 – McQuade Children’s Services Community Service Award

1996 – Orange County Woman of Achievement, Sarah Wells Girl Scout Council

1991 – Person of the Year, Orange County Alcohol & Drug Abuse Council

Sister Peggy is a founding member of the Orange County Irish Heritage Festival Foundation and serves on their Board of Directors. She is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Molloy College, Rockville Centre, New York, and a Trustee of Orange County Community College.

At present, Dr. Murphy is an Educational Consultant at Pius XII Early Learning Center, a Mental Health Representative in the Orange County Family Court Divorce Mediation Program, and a Professor of Religious Studies at Mount Saint Mary College. In September 2002, she was appointed Chair of the Philosophy and Religious Studies Division, Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, New York.
