A zoo as a non-traditional clinical experience for nursing students

Abstract: Nursing educators seek new and different clinical settings to practice nursing skills, blend theory with practice, and help students learn in different ways. At the same time, recent curriculum changes have included increased efforts to tie nursing education to the humanities. A zoo trip to observe animals uses a non-traditional setting to highlight connections with other living creatures, to practice observation and assessment in a more relaxed, "safe" environment, and to help decrease anxiety-all of which facilitate learning.
