Where can I find this book?
Books in the library are arranged by call numbers. Reference books are located on the first floor of the library. The second floor contains the reserve materials and the recreational reading and audio collections, as well as current browsing periodicals (magazines). The first floor of the library houses books with call numbers from A-PR. The second floor of the library has books with call numbers from PS-Z.

How do I find a book?
First a user must find a call number using the online library catalog. The call number corresponds to its location in the bookstacks. Reference books are located on the first floor of the library. The second floor contains the reserve materials and the recreational reading and audio collections, as well as current browsing periodicals (magazines). The first floor of the library houses books with call numbers from A-PR. The second floor of the library has books with call numbers from PS-Z. You can always stop by the reference desk or send an email if you have a question.

Where do I find the books on reserve my professor mentioned?
You can search for materials on reserve by either the professor’s name or the name of the course.

What do I do if I can't find something on the shelves?
Ask a library staff member to double check to make sure the item is not checked out or missing. If it is indeed supposed to be on the shelf, library staff will start the “Missing” procedure. The item in question may be requested from another library through Interlibrary Loan.

Where do I check out books?
The circulation desk is located on the second floor of the library. There are also self-checkout stations located on the first floor, in the Curriculum Materials Center (CMC), and in the Reference area. Student ID cards are required.

When I request something from another library how long will it take?
There is no exact timeframe for materials that are requested from other libraries through the interlibrary loan service. If the requested item is a hard copy (a book, a video, etc.), that material must be shipped here and can take a week or so. Articles that are available in electronic format may be sent within a day or two. Call 845-569-3284 for any questions about materials you have requested through interlibrary loan.

How long can books and DVDs be checked out?
Students may check books out that are not on reserve for 28 days. DVDs that are not on reserve may be checked out for 7 days.

Is there a copy of my textbook in the library?
The library does not have a collection of textbooks for the courses offered at the College, though on occasion, the library may have a book in the collection that a professor uses as a text. Students will need to purchase textbooks either through the College bookstore or through online sites such as www.bigwords.com or www.directtextbook.com. Textbook rentals are available online through sites such as www.chegg.com.

Can I check out magazines?
You may use our print magazines and other periodicals while in the library, and you can make photocopies of articles in the magazines. Issues from the current year may not be checked out. Issues from all other years may be checked out for 3 days.

Can I return books when the library is closed?
Yes, by using the book drop box.

I'm a faculty member. How do I put materials on reserve?
The Mount Saint Mary College Library offers two methods to place materials on reserve: traditional reserves, where physical items are housed in the library and checked out for use, and eReserves, where articles or chapters are digitally scanned and made available for 24/7 around-the-clock access through the library’s online catalog. Please note that articles and book chapters are automatically placed on eReserve unless an instructor specifies otherwise. Certain copyright restrictions apply. Copiers and Computers

Where are the copiers?
There is a copier on each floor of the library. Copiers also function as printers for the Library’s computers.

How much does it cost to make a copy?
For Mount Saint Mary College students, costs are:
Black and white single-sided copying is $0.05 per page
Black and white double-sided copying is $0.08 for a two-sided page
Color single-sided copying is $0.10 per page
Color double-sided copying is $0.18 for a two-sided page

For non-MSMC-affiliated people, the cost is $0.10 for black and white copies and $0.25 for color copies.

Can I make a color copy?
Yes, all three library copiers can make color copies. Just press the large round button with the color swirl on it to make a color copy.

How do I print from the computers?
You select print in the application, go over to the swipe box on the printer, and swipe your college ID card. If you do not have your college ID, then you can enter your computer login and password on the touch-screen display. Your printouts will be produced from the printer.

Printing is set up to be black and white and double-sided. To print single-sided, click the Properties button in the print dialog box, click on the Finishing tab, and then click to remove the checkmark from two-sided.

To print in color, in the print dialog box, select Properties. At the bottom of the box there is a drop-down where you can select Color.

Where can I plug in my computer?
There are outlets available throughout the library for laptop recharging.

Is there wireless Internet access?
Wireless Internet access is available to all students and faculty. Contact the IT Support Desk (845-569-3491) with questions.

How do I print in color?
In the print dialog box, select Properties. Then click on the color tab, and select color. Click OK and then OK again.

Where can I get help activating my acount or other technical issues?
For technical issues beyond those the library staff can help you with, contact the IT Support Desk (845-569-3491).

Your Library Account

What do I do when I returned an item but it's still checked out to me?
Speak with staff at the Circulation Desk (845-569-3600) and they will help you with this issue.

What forms of payment can I use to pay my fines and bills? Do I have to pay now?
The library accepts cash and checks for payment of fines and bills. Until you pay your fines and bills, your borrowing privilages and access to resources may be denied.

How can I renew what I have checked out? How many times can I renew them?
You may renew once online here. For further renewals or to renew after the due date, speak with staff at the Circulation Desk (845-569-3600) and they will help you. Note that materials on reserve cannot be renewed.

Can alumni check out books?
Yes, speak with staff at the Circulation Desk (845-569-3600) and they will help you.

Resources

Where can I look up an article for my paper?
There are databases of articles to which the library subscribes. These databases are arranged alphabetically by name or in subject groupings.

Can I use the library's databases when I'm not on campus?
Yes, the library's resources are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Students, staff, and faculty can use the library's databases when they are not on campus. You will need to enter your MSMC username and password, when prompted, in order to access the databases. Click here for more information.

How do I cite an article for my paper?
The library has many resources to help with researching and writing a paper. Among them is a listing of information about preparing a bibliography, where information on the various citation formats is provided.

What if the library doesn't own something I need?
You can request materials from other libraries through the interlibrary loan service. You can also suggest a purchase.

Facilities

Can I reserve a study room?
The library has several study rooms. Rooms may be reserved by College faculty and staff through Astra, the College room reservation system.

Where are the bathrooms?
There are public restrooms in several locations in the library. Consult the library floor map for locations.

Where are the water fountains?
There are water fountains in the dining hall area of the first floor of the Dominican Center.
