Picturing Writing is a dynamic art-and-literature-based approach to writing designed to meet the needs of all students. Through the use of simple hands-on art experiences, the study of quality picture books, and an on-going Artist/Writers Workshop, this innovative approach to literacy learning gives students access to multiple modalities for thinking and expressing their ideas. It allows all students to enter the reading/writing process from a position of personal strength and enthusiasm. Picturing Writing provides an enticing, year-round, alternative pathway into literacy learning guaranteed to engage reluctant readers and writers.

Supported by current best practices and over two decades of independent research, this unique approach to literacy learning can be used to address English Language Arts Core Standards in a way that reaches a wide range of learners. It is also easily integrated into the social studies and science curriculum.

This year’s Summer Institute will offer a weeklong immersion into the Picturing Writing process as participants explore both narrative and informational reading and writing through the parallel and complementary languages of pictures and words. No previous art experience necessary!

* The workshop fee includes all art materials used during the institute, as well as instructional materials and a poster.

** This workshop may be taken for 3 graduate credits for an additional fee. Current students should contact their advisors. All others should contact Theresa Brundage at 845-569-3525 or Theresa.Brundage@msmc.edu.
