Ninth Annual Philosophy Workshop

June 19-23, 2019
Mount Saint Mary College

The Catholic and Dominican Institute's Ninth Annual Philosophy Workshop, "Aquinas on Human Action and Virtue," will be held at Mount Saint Mary College on June 19-23, 2019.

Aquinas offers a powerful synthetic account of human action and of the virtues that dispose human beings to act well. These topics have also attracted significant interest in contemporary philosophy. Theories of human action are also of first importance for ethics. What are the basic constituent dimensions of a human act? How do we distinguish acts of different moral kinds? (For example, what is the distinction between shooting someone as an act of self-defense and shooting someone as an act of murder?) What makes an act voluntary, and what factors undermine moral responsibility for an act? Are some acts wrong no matter what the circumstances? If yes, why, and which kinds of acts?

Presenters include:

  • Fr. James Brent, OP, Dominican House of Studies
  • Fr. Stephen Brock, Pontifical University of the Holy Cross
  • Edward Feser, PhD, Pasadena City College
  • Fred Freddoso, PhD, University of Notre Dame
  • Steven Long, PhD, Ave Maria University
  • John O'Callaghan, PhD, University of Notre Dame
  • Fr. Michael Sherwin, OP, University of Fribourg, Switzerland
