Lisa Alvarez is Director of Admissions for Graduate Programs and Adult Degree Retention at Mount Saint Mary College.
In this role she provides overall leadership to the team that recruits and retains adult and graduate students at Mount Saint Mary College. Lisa also oversees the college’s programs for veterans at West Point and Stewart Air Force Base.
Lisa holds a master’s degree in environmental administration and a bachelor’s degree in public relations. Prior to working in higher education full-time, she began teaching as an adjunct faculty member 20 years ago at a variety of colleges; Berkely extension Center, Bronx Community College, Marist College, where she also assisted in the designing of hybrid and online courses. Lisa teaches Public Speaking and Environmental Sustainability at Mount Saint Mary College.
Her areas of research include trends in adult learning and strategies for recruitment and retention. She has presented at four national conferences for CALEM (Conference on Adult Learner Enrollment Management) in Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, and Virginia and five regional conferences for UPCEA (University Professional & Continuing Education Association) in Rhode Island, Maine, New Jersey and New York.
She has also done consulting work for several colleges on the east coast to help them improve their recruitment and retention strategies.
Lisa is on the program committee for Leadership Orange, a local organization, whose mission is to educate current and emerging leaders by providing skills to foster involvement in our community and county and knowledge to be catalysts for positive change. She was also recently chosen by the Office of U.S. Representative Sean Patrick Maloney to be a member of the Service Academy Selection Board, which interviews and selects qualified applicants for the U.S. Military, Air Force, Naval and Merchant Marine Academies.
A resident of Beacon, she volunteers to help guide the City of Beacon in balanced growth and maintaining socio economic diversity. In Newbrugh she volunteers with "We are Newburgh" a group that is active in social justice and community advocacy.
