Author/illustrator’s collage art on display in Mount gallery

March 27, 2017

Susan L. Roth’s collage art is on display at Mount Saint Mary College’ Kaplan Family Library and Learning Center, located in the Dominican Center, through May.

The extraordinary collage art of Susan L. Roth is now on display on the first floor of Mount Saint Mary College’s Kaplan Family Library and Learning Center, located at 330 Powell Ave., Newburgh, N.Y.

The public is invited to view the gallery during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. The gallery will remain up through May.

The Kaplan Family Library is located in the Mount’s Dominican Center.

Roth is an award-winning author/illustrator of more than 50 books for children. None of her work involves paint or ink, instead relying exclusively on cutting and tearing. From the most complete background papers to the tiniest dots, she only cuts or rips.

The library exhibit includes art from two of Roth’s books: a complete set of illustrations from “¡See You Later, Amigo!” and four collages from “Parrots Over Puerto Rico.” A number of Roth’s books – including these two – are now on display in the Curriculum Materials Center, just down the hall from the exhibit.

“This is one of the best exhibitions we’ve ever had,” said Barbara Petruzzelli, director of the Kaplan Family Library and Learning Center. “The intricacies of the artist’s work are really impressive.”

Roth will be the keynote speaker at the Mount’s 24th Annual Conference on Literacy, “Arts-Based Literacy,” on April 1. Late registration for the conference is $50. Participants can also enjoy lunch and a presentation by Roth for an additional $5.

The conference is sponsored by the Collaborative for Equity in Literacy Learning (CELL) in the MSMC Division of Education.
