May 12, 2017

About 40 people enjoyed the “Paint It Forward” fundraiser at Mount Saint Mary College, to benefit the Cheryl L. Walker Nursing Scholarship.

Mount Saint Mary College and Orange Regional Medical Center hosted the “Paint It Forward” fundraiser for the Cheryl L. Walker Nursing Scholarship on Saturday, May 6, earning more than $1,500 for the cause.

The event, held in Mount Saint Mary College’s Hudson Hall, consisted of a painting class, wine, and cheese. Participants, taught by professional artists, crafted their own scenic landscapes.

The scholarship is named after Cheryl Walker, who was a registered nurse, clinical nurse specialist, and an educator at the Mount. It will be awarded annually to a student enrolled in the Mount’s School of Nursing baccalaureate RN program.

Throughout her nearly 40-year career, Walker held positions at Vassar Brothers Medical Center and Orange Regional Medical Center. She passed away on January 13, 2016, at the age of 58, due to cancer.

Spearheading the efforts to establish and fund the scholarship are Andrea Ackermann, professor of nursing at Mount Saint Mary College; Sylvia Stubbs of the Hudson Valley Staff Development Educators Group; and Lisa Summers-Gibson, medical group nursing administrator for the Greater Hudson Valley Health System.
