Mount Saint Mary College is proud to announce that Heather Fitzsimmons, a career counselor with the college’s Career Center, has been selected to receive a Forty Under 40 Mover and Shaker Award from the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Each year, the chamber bestows the honor upon 40 individuals under the age of 40 who have shown a strong commitment to the Hudson Valley. A selection committee, comprised of former honorees, judged nominations based on professional and community achievements. An award ceremony will take place in April.Heather Fitzsimmons, career counselor with Mount Saint Mary College’s Career Center and a 40 Under 40 award recipient.
“I am excited and humbled to be a recipient of this prestigious Forty Under 40 Award,” said Fitzsimmons. “It is an honor to be recognized alongside so many other remarkable professionals.”
In her role as a Mount career counselor, Fitzsimmons is a driven educator and advocate for students. She helps Mount scholars to network with local and regional business leaders, obtain internships, and prepare for the job market. In addition, she passionately engages in community events to help cultivate new opportunities for students at the college.
“The reason I became a career counselor is because I want to help others find their passion and achieve their goals,” she said. “I want to be the person for those who are seeking new opportunities while supporting and guiding them through their journey. I am grateful that the Mount supports and allows me to give back to the community and to spend time connecting with others in the Hudson Valley.”
The Career Center prepares students for varied career opportunities in the Hudson Valley, New York City, the Capital Region, and beyond. Each semester, it hosts programs such as job fairs, events featuring specific academic programs, business dining etiquette, interview and search strategies workshops, and off-campus professional visits to help pre-professionals explore career paths.
Community service is important to Fitzsimmons, a lifelong resident of the Hudson Valley. She is an advisory council member of the Hudson Valley Young Professionals, where she coordinates fundraisers and other programs to engage young businesspeople in the Hudson Valley area.  Fitzsimmons also serves her local community as a member of the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department. Additionally, she is an active volunteer with the United Way and participates in the Polar Plunge each year to help raise funds for the Special Olympics.
Fitzsimmons recently attended the prestigious Leadership Dutchess program, spearheaded by The Chamber Foundation, Inc. The program is dedicated to educating and motivating citizens to serve in leadership roles within the local community. The program is spearheaded by Mount alumnus Nicholas Shannon ’03, the executive director of the Chamber Foundation.
Fitzsimmons holds a Master of Science in Education from The College of Saint Rose. With her high energy and enthusiasm, she is always looking for innovative ways to foster new experiences for the local and Mount Saint Mary College communities, and build lasting relationships within the Hudson Valley.
