Mount Saint Mary College’sHigher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) welcomed more than 30 scholars this semester, including six incoming freshmen.
According to Harmony Cross, Mount HEOP director, the students are gearing up to do great work. The HEOP program emphasizes academic achievement, leadership development, and service. Members of the group have already volunteered at the Newburgh Ministry charitable organization and are planning more community service projects for the future.
The HEOP students hail from New York City, Orange County, Dutchess County, and beyond.
The principal mission of HEOP at Mount Saint Mary College is to provide educational opportunity and support to traditionally underserved students.
Cross noted that these students have strong academic potential, but would otherwise be excluded from higher education due to circumstances of academic and economic disadvantage.
