Mount professor named 2019 Educator of Excellence

Marie-Therese Sulit, an associate professor of English and director of the Honors Program at Mount Saint Mary College, was recently named a 2019 Educator of Excellence by the New York State English Council (NYSEC).

Sulit was presented with the award at the NYSEC Awards Luncheon on Friday, October 18.

This award is given to educators who are leaders in the classroom, collaborators with colleagues, and mentors to teachers new to the profession. Qualities of those who receive this award include implementing best practices, challenging students to become skillful readers and writers, and showing dedication to one’s own learning and to the profession.

Sulit is a member of the Association for Asian American Studies, the American Studies Association, The Filipino American National Historical Society, and the Mid-Hudson Association for Women in Higher Education. Her research interests include Asian-American literature and studies, multicultural American literature, and popular culture. She earned master’s degrees in English and teaching from SUNY Binghamton, and a doctoral degree in English from the University of Minnesota.

At the Mount, Sulit spearheads the rigorous Honors Program. This program challenges students to maximize their learning and leadership skills, and is open to students of all majors.

Sulit has served the college for more than a dozen years.
