Mount science students awarded first place for research

Mount Saint Mary College Biology/Pre-Med students Jessica Musacchio of Beacon, N.Y. and Sabina Zarod of Poughquag, N.Y. were recently awarded first place for their research poster presentation “The Molecular Journey: Annotation of Microbacteriophages Schnapsides and Papafritta” at the NE-1 Regional TriBeta Conference at Hofstra University on Saturday, April 27.
 
TriBeta, or Beta Beta Beta, is the national honor society for Biology. The Mount’s chapter was established in 1975.
 
At the Mount, the students’ research mentors are Evan Merkhofer, assistant professor of Biology, and Suparna Bhalla, associate professor of Biology.
 
The students also received the Student Research Scholarship Award, sponsored by the college’s Research on Campus Committee, to attend this conference.
