Mount senior Nursing student Nicole Laghezza, second from left, presented on behalf the student externship program at Southside Hospital in Bayshore, N.Y. Laghezza participated in the externship program last summer through connections from the college’s Career Center.
Mount Saint Mary College student Nicole Laghezza of Sayville, N.Y. recently served as a panelist at Northwell Health’s Golden Ticket Showcase.
The recruiting event, meant for junior and senior Nursing students from around New York State, allowed the future nurses to network with healthcare professionals and hear from experts about the profession.
Laghezza, a senior Nursing student who recently served as a student nurse extern at Southside Hospital in Bayshore, N.Y., was selected to speak at the event on behalf of the hospital’s student nurse extern program.
The experience was rewarding both personally and professionally, Laghezza remarked.
“From being a panelist, I was able to overcome my fear of public speaking,” she noted. “Not only did I have the opportunity of speaking to an audience of 300-plus [attendees], but also the honorable leaders of the Northwell Health healthcare system.”
Additionally, the event allowed her to network with employers from various Northwell Health hospitals. “Being able to hear and talk to current RN’s who work at Northwell hospitals, I was able to really see myself in their shoes one day, sharing my experiences once again,” she said.
Laghezza obtained the externship through the help of the Mount’s Career Center. The Career Center helps prepare students for life after college through professional development programs, résumé and cover letter assistance, career exploration, and internship and externship placements.
