Newburgh, NY -
Mount Saint Mary College students celebrated their school spirit at the 22nd annual bonfire on Saturday, October 28.
The event ended the college’s Spirit of the Mount Week with a bang, and included student dance performances and more.
Also during Spirit Week, students competed against each other to take home the Mount Olympics trophy – and the bragging rights that go along with it. After a competition that included performances, relays, a tug of war, and more, the junior class emerged victorious. More than 750 students attended the event.
Spirit Week is about far more than the bonfire and friendly competition. For example, students participated in a “coin war,” which raised $1,741.65 over five days for the Mount’s Thanksgiving Food Drive, which surpassed the record by more than $1,000. The coins took 12 volunteers more than five hours to count, according to Roger May, assistant director of Campus Ministry, who thanked the community for their generosity.
In addition, students attended a kickoff Mass celebrated by Fr. Gregoire J. Fluet, campus chaplain and director of Campus Ministry; enjoyed a powderpuff football game; saw a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show just in time for Halloween; and more.
