NEWBURGH, N.Y. -
Mount Saint Mary College nursing professors Jill Sussman, Andrea Ackermann, and Nancy Owen recently presented “Classroom Mental Health Simulation-Based Experience” at the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning Conference in Texas.
The presentation, which originated as an exercise for Sussman’s mental health class at the Mount, followed Standard IX – “Simulator Design” – from INACSL best practice.
“Students are always concerned about going into a mental health setting and not knowing what to say,” explained Sussman. “This is our attempt to ease them into the experience and boost confidence. We had an actor 'standardized patient' play a depressed woman. There was a script, we videotaped, then showed to my classes. Students then determined whether this helped them by answering our follow-up questions. Overall, it was very well received.”
The Mount professors also shared their research with a group of nursing simulation educators after it was selected for the “Professor Rounds” program at the conference
“It was a very positive and enlightening experience,” said Ackermann.
