Year of service: Mount students learn of long-term volunteer opportunities

February 27, 2020

Mount Saint Mary College students learned about long-term service opportunities in the United States and abroad at “A Year of Service” on Tuesday, February 25.

Hosted on campus by the college’s Career Center, the event featured information about service organizations like Peace Corps, Americorps, Student Conservation Corps, Children’s Corps, City Year, and more.

Sr. Catherine Walsh, OP, professor emerita of Communications, discussed Dominican Volunteers, USA, which helps the poor and marginalized by ministering with fellow volunteers. The organization works with schools in impoverished areas, shelters for domestic violence, clinics, and more.

“It’s a wonderful experience,” said Sr. Walsh. “You learn more about yourself than you ever thought you would, doing things you’ve never done in places of the country you’ve never been.”
