Education at the Mount

Mount Saint Mary College has long been known for its excellence in teacher education. In fact, school districts often come to the Mount asking for recent graduates to hire, because of the quality of our teacher education programs. Mount teacher candidates are immersed into the field by the second semester of freshman year and complete fieldwork hours in local schools throughout their four years at the Mount, including at the K-8 school located right on campus. Plus, you’ll see our teacher students lending a hand in the community, such as running literacy programs at local community centers organized by the Mount’s award-winning Education honor society. Mount education alumni can be found in school districts throughout the state, country, and even the world, and two Mount alumni were even named New York State Teachers of the Year in the last decade.

There are so many ways that you can customize your Mount education degree. We offer tracks in Childhood Education, Adolescence Education, Special Education, Early Childhood, and Middle School at the undergraduate level, and students also select a complementary major in a content area (math, history, science, English, etc.) in which to additionally specialize. Our students can also continue their education right here with a Master of Science in Education, allowing them to earn their advanced degree in a comfortable environment. Additionally, for students pursuing the Adolescence Education track, the Mount now offers five-year programs that lead to a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, English, History, or Math; Adolescent Education certification; and a master’s degree in Education, all in just five years. The advantage of the five-year program is that students can continue to learn from the same faculty they’ve already come to know well, as well as save time and money on their graduate work.

A stellar Education program isn’t the only thing you’ll find at Mount Saint Mary College. At the Mount, you’ll discover a small, tight-knit community of students and faculty on a modern, 60-acre campus overlooking the breathtaking Hudson River. Located in Newburgh, NY (halfway between Albany and New York City), our students benefit from the history and beauty of the Hudson Valley while only an hour’s train ride away from NYC, offering students a diverse array of internship and job opportunities. On campus, Mount students enjoy newly-renovated living and learning facilities, including spacious dorms, a modern library, and four dining areas, as well as more than 30 campus clubs and organizations, 21 Division III athletics, and numerous opportunities for community service. Our students are supported financially through generous scholarships and financial aid (99% of freshmen receive Mount scholarships and grants) and academically by the Career Center, Writing Center, and Office of Student Success. All of this preparation leads to fantastic alumni success – 95% of our 2017 graduates were employed within 6 months of graduation (2017 graduate survey).
