2020 Banned Books Symposium

In partnership withe word censored displayed twiceth Southeastern New York Library Resources Council and regional School Library Systems, Mount Saint Mary College will host its second Banned Books Symposium on Saturday, March 7, 2020 on the MSMC campus in Newburgh, NY. This half-day conference will kick off with Drag Queen Victoria Precise reading from a children's book that was challenged due to its LGBTQ content. Following the reading, a panel comprised of children's literature professors, school librarians, and public librarian will discuss the current status of access to LGBTQ literature in children's libraries.

Thereafter, breakout sessions will feature presentations on all aspects of working with and responding to banned, challenged, and controversial books. The closing session of the day will feature keynote speaker Nick Bruel, author and illustrator of New York Times bestseller BoingBad KittyBad Kitty Gets a Bath and Bad Kitty Meets the Baby, among others. A book sale and signing will follow.

Throughout the conference, Professor Chris Neyen's students' artwork will be on display. Each piece will surround a theme, thought, or idea stemming from banned or challenged literature. Attendees will have ample time to interact with the display.

Registration for this event is $25 and includes breakfast and lunch. Continuing education credit will be awarded to qualifying teachers in the Hudson Valley who take part in the symposium. Click here to register for the Banned Books Symposium.
