Birth Plans Gone Awry: Reactions, Reassurances, and Regrets

iROC - Investigating Research on Campus

Please be wi Portrait of: Yasmine Kalksteinth us January 31st when Yasmine Kalkstein, Academic Affairs, will present Birth Plans Gone Awry: Reactions, Reassurances, and Regrets.

Women often approach the birth experience with expectations often epitomized by the creation of birth plans. Birth plans have been shown to empower women, lessen anxiety, and lead to more satisfaction with their birth experience. The birth experience, however, like many other medical experiences, does not always unfold according to expectations. Risks to the mother’s health or evidence that the baby might be in distress may precipitate the need for inductions, cesarean deliveries, or instrumental deliveries. While it is understandable that medical events may present unexpected challenges, these challenges can have emotional consequences; 20-33% of women report birth as traumatic and this particularly occurs when the birth strays from the plan.

Satisfaction in the face of challenging medical situations can be increased by patient-centered care. Over the course of the talk, Dr. Kalkstein will describe studies designed to understand what variables influence birth satisfaction when birth plans become disrupted, and how to mitigate frustrations and regrets. Dr. Kalkstein examined how regrets were predicted by personality variables, childbirth preparation, and support during labor and delivery, and highlight the importance of women advocating for themselves in lessening regrets. This line of research informs how we can improve healthcare provider-patient communication in instances where "the plan" goes awry.

Yasmine Kalkstein is Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at MSMC and also holds an appointment as an Associate Professor of Psychology. She received her undergraduate degree in Biopsychology from University of Virginia, spent a year as an NIH Fellow with a focus in genetic research on diabetes, and then completed her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at University of Minnesota. She taught at St. Olaf College, University of Minnesota, and North Hennepin Community College before joining the Mount in 2010. Her research has included topics ranging from academic integrity, motivation, and improving classroom instruction to risk perception and medical decision making.

Birth Plans Gone Awry: Reactions, Reassurances, and Regrets will take place in Kaplan Library Room 218 in the Dominican Center. This event has been approved FYE credit as College Connection. All are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!
