What’s All the Buzz about the Newburgh Armory? Practice/Service Makes Possible

iROC - Investigating Research on Campus

 Portrait of: Janine Bixler

Please be with us January 30th when Janine Bixler, Division of Education, presents What’s All the Buzz about the Newburgh Armory? Practice/Service Makes Possible.

On Saturday mornings, MSMC education faculty and teacher candidates join young Newburgh learners, their families and other community partners to engage in real world literacy experiences at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center (NAUC). This talk will share research on how teaching practice needs to reflect cultural and community practices. The evolution of the MSMC-NAUC arts-based literacy programs will be featured, with an emphasis on how all stakeholders have benefitted and continue to shape future teaching and learning possibilities.

Janine K. Bixler, Ph.D. is Professor of Education and Director of the Collaborative for Equity in Literacy Learning (CELL) at Mount Saint Mary College. She received her PhD in Language and Literacy Education from Georgia State University. Her research interests include real world literacy, family literacy, supporting preservice teachers in culturally responsive literacy practices, and developing preservice teachers’ own love of reading. She has presented at international and national conferences and has published her research in journals, including Teaching and Teacher Education, Reading Horizons, Michigan Reading Journal, and Mentoring & Tutoring.

What’s All the Buzz about the Newburgh Armory? Practice/Service Makes Possible will take place in Kaplan Library Room 218 of the Dominican Center. This event has been approved FYE credit as College Connection. All are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!
