How and Why Do Students Use the Library?

iROC - Investigating Research on Campus

With services and resources ranging from one-on-one research consultation, collaborative study areas, and quiet study areas, it is imperative to know how and why the academic library is being used by students. A quantitative survey was conducted by the Kaplan Family Library which revealed that students certainly were using the library, and when. But beyond this, it was difficult to know if there was something specific and substantial that the library was not providing for students. Also, the library’s perceived strengths were also unclear. Derek Sanderson, Assistant Librarian for Instruction Services, working along with Gina Shelton, the Head Librarian from Dominican College, conducted focus groups and individual one-on-one interviews in order to gather qualitative data and determine the library's strengths and weaknesses from the viewpoint of the students, and also to find out how and why students use the library

Derek Sanderson, Assistant Librarian for Instruction Services at Mount Saint Mary College, completed his Masters in Library and Information Science from  Indiana University.  He currently oversees Reference Services and library instruction for upper division courses. He is also coordinator of the St. John's Bible.

Gina Shelton, Head Librarian at Dominican College, provides leadership and direction for the Sullivan Library as well as teaches information literacy skills, and copyright and scholarly publishing concepts. Her research interests include information seeking behavior, and student and faculty engagement with libraries.

How and Why Do Students Use the Library?  will take place in the DC Cafe of the Dominican Center. This event has been approved FYE credit as College Connection. All are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!
